One of the main shopping streets in Bangor city centre has been closed because of a "significant" fire.

Firefighters were called to a blaze in a flat above Japanese restaurant Noodle One on High Street at about 03:00 GMT.

The flat was empty at the time and no-one is reported to have been hurt in the fire, which is now out.

North Wales Police said the road would remain closed between the cathedral and Varsity bar while an investigation into the cause is carried out.

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said crews and an aerial ladder from Bangor and Menai Bridge attended and have now left the scene.

Aaron Spencer, Bangor station manager, said: "We have had a significant fire within the building, which has now been extinguished.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank the vigilant member of the public who contacted to alert us.

"It is currently being made safe so we can continue our fire investigation into the cause."
