A 16-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a woman died in Carmarthenshire.

Officers were called to a property in St Clears at about 17:40 GMT on Tuesday.

A Dyfed-Powys Police spokesman said the force was investigating the murder of a woman and the teenager was in custody.

The woman has been named locally as Fiona Scourfield, also known as Suzi Wales, who was a member of German Shepherd Rescue UK.

Suzanne Syers, from the charity, had known Ms Scourfield for eight years and said she was a "lovely, genuine, down to earth" person.

"I'm shocked, it kind of keeps hitting me and I go numb, it's unbelievable," she told ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Wales.

Ms Scourfield ran the fundraising side of the charity and was the main point of contact for finding new homes for the dogs, she said.

"If there was any animals in need, she would be there, she was a real animal advocate, she was absolutely one in a million," she added.

In a statement posted on Facebook earlier on Wednesday, the charity said it was "devastated" by the loss of one of its longest standing members.

The post said: "Suzi worked tirelessly to make the world a better place for animals and her loss is a huge loss not only to us but to animals worldwide.

"She spent many weekends braving all kinds of weathers fundraising and raising awareness in the south Wales area, and could always be relied upon to help any dog in need.

"We are all in shock at the moment, so please bear with us whilst we come to terms with our devastating loss."

The charity said Ms Scourfield's dog Bruno was her "absolute world".

Animal lover Ms Scourfield kept chickens, goats and dogs at her small farm near Laugharne.

"It's a great shock hearing the tragedy that has happened in our community," said St Clears mayor Jane Rees.

Ms Scourfield previously worked at the Dylan Thomas Boathouse in Laugharne and her mother lives locally.

"This has really shocked people, we've had accidents around here but nothing like this," said Clare Millington, who manages the convenience store in Laugharne.

"She would come into the shop often with her mother and her mother would come in on her own. They were both nice."

A neighbouring farmer added: "Everyone is in shock. It's just unbelievable.

"Fiona was a lovely lady. She had lived here all her life and was popular and well-thought of because of her charity work.

"She was always taking in strays, getting them healthy and re-homing them."

Ms Scourfield's mother has been told she was found dead when police were called to the farm on Tuesday evening.

An incident room has been set up at Carmarthen Police Station and police are not looking for anyone else in connection with Ms Scourfield's death.
