Mass meeting for Aberdeen council job cut workers

Hundreds of workers facing compulsory redundancy at Aberdeen City Council have been invited by their unions to attend a mass meeting next week.

The council is planning to make 900 job cuts after staff on more than 拢21,000 rejected a voluntary 5% pay cut.

The joint unions said Thursday's meeting would give workers the chance to work out a response to the council's "appalling decision".

A protest will also be held at the council's headquarters on 10 February.

The council said there was "no alternative" to the cuts as it had to make budget savings of 拢120m over the next five years.

Unions previously said they would "vigorously oppose" the redundancies and called for fresh negotiations.

Strike action has not been ruled out.

The local government agency Cosla has warned that other councils may also face cuts on the same level.
