Plea over racial abuse of rail staff at Glasgow Central

  • Published

A man is being sought by British Transport Police (BTP) after a ScotRail worker was subjected to racial abuse at Glasgow Central Station.

The worker offered assistance to the suspect after he tried to use an invalid ticket at one of the station's low-level barriers at 22:45 on Friday.

The man then subjected the attendant to "racial insults".

BTP said such behaviour would "not be tolerated" and appealed for anyone who witnessed the incident to contact them.

'Racial insults'

Det Con David Merchant, of BTP, said: "The member of staff was manning a ticket barrier on the low-level of the station when the suspect approached and tried to use an invalid ticket.

"When the member of staff offered assistance the other man became abusive and directed racial insults towards him.

"This was an unprovoked racial attack on a member of staff who was simply trying to do his job and extensive inquiries, including the viewing of CCTV, are ongoing."

A ScotRail spokesman added: "We do not tolerate abuse of any kind and hope this appeal is successful."
