A man in his 70s has been punched a number of times by a man who tried to steal his car in Dromore in the early hours of Saturday.

The victim left his home at Beech Grove in the County Down town at about 00:30 BST and was approached by a man in his early 20s.

The man demanded his car keys - which he refused - and implied he had a gun.

As the older man went back towards his home, the attacker punched him three times in the head.

'Distressing ordeal'

He then made further threats before leaving.

"This was a distressing ordeal for the victim, who has been left shaken by the incident, but thankfully no injuries were reported," Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) Insp Browne said.

Police enquiries are ongoing and anyone who was in the area at the time and saw anything suspicious, or anyone with CCTV, doorbell or dashcam footage, is asked to contact police on 101.
