Frontline healthcare workers in the Causeway Coast and Glens council area are to be awarded the freedom of the borough.

The move was unanimously agreed at a special council meeting on Wednesday.

Alderman John McAuley, who proposed the motion, said it was "right and fitting" for them to be recognised.

The freedom of the borough is the highest honour that a council can bestow on any organisation or individual.

The DUP councillor said it was about reiterating "our heartfelt gratitude to each and every member of staff for their unwavering service".

The motion was put forward in recognition of their "selfless, dedicated and high-quality lifesaving care to patients and family members in NHS facilities, community settings and households in the borough".

'Unflinching and tireless efforts'

Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens, councillor Steven Callaghan said the motion recognised the "unflinching and tireless efforts" of health and care staff working on the frontlines.

"On behalf of the entire borough, I wish to pay tribute to all these hard-working staff who have sacrificed so much," he said.

"I cannot think of a more deserving group of people to receive this award."

Councillors will now decide who is chosen to attend the freedom of the borough ceremony, so that all sections of the workforce are represented.

The award will be conferred at a special ceremony in 2024.
