Coleraine: Public praised for confronting man with knife

A judge has praised members of the public who confronted a man walking on a Coleraine street while armed with a knife.
Corrie Gordon, 23, from Cappagh Avenue in Portstewart, appeared at Ballymena Magistrates' Court by video link on Thursday.
He faces seven charges including common assault, having a bladed article and making threats to kill.
The charges relate to an to an incident on the Bushmills Road on Wednesday.
'Extreme bravery'
Refusing bail, district judge Nigel Broderick told the court that members of the public had "exhibited extreme bravery" in confronting the man "who was armed with a dangerous weapon".
A police officer opposed bail and said Mr Gordon had shown a "callous disregard for public safety".
Following after his arrest, Mr Gordon had "made no admissions and showed no remorse" during police interview.
A defence solicitor said Mr Gordon "enjoyed the presumption of innocence" and said "robust bail conditions" could be put in place.
However, the district judge said he was concerned about further offending.
The defendant was remanded into custody. He will appear in court again on 10 July.
