NI weather: Ice warning issued for Northern Ireland

An ice warning has been issued for Northern Ireland ahead of freezing conditions on Christmas night.

As colder air moves south on Sunday evening temperatures will fall to 0C and below quite widely.

The Met Office has said that a mixture of wintry showers will lead to ice at times in untreated areas.

Some disruption and delays are possible first thing on Boxing Day, with a risk of slips and falls.

The alert comes into force at midnight on Christmas Day and lasts until 10:00 GMT on Monday.

Road users have been advised to exercise caution when travelling and roads considered at risk will be salted on Sunday evening.

A weather warning for ice has also been issued across the Republic of Ireland.

The Irish weather service, Met 脡ireann, is warning of hazardous driving conditions.

The alert is also valid from midnight on Christmas Day until 10:00 GMT on Monday.

Some homes and businesses in Munster and south Leinster were without power for parts of Saturday due to thunder and lightning.

Energy company ESB has restored power to most premises that have been affected.

One of the outages, in Waterford city, affected more than 400 customers, but has now been rectified.
