Two men in their 40s have been arrested by garda铆 (Irish police) in connection with the discovery of a bomb found underneath a police officer's car in east Belfast.

The device was discovered at Shandon Park golf club, close to PSNI headquarters, on Saturday 1 June.

On Tuesday morning, members of the garda special detective unit arrested two men in Dublin.

They are being held at a garda station in the city.

Det Supt Sean Wright, from the PSNI's terrorism investigation unit, welcomed the development.

"The arrests should send a clear message to those involved in terrorist activity that the border does not provide an escape route," he said.

"Our two police services work collaboratively on a daily basis, sharing knowledge and information, to ensure that there is no hiding place for criminals or terrorists."
