North Yorkshire Police warn drivers of dangerous roads

  • Published

Police in North Yorkshire have issued a safety warning as freezing temperatures are expected to bring treacherous driving conditions across the county.

A severe weather warning remains in place, with forecasts that temperatures could drop to -11C overnight, leading to black ice on the roads.

Police said similar driving conditions in January led to a 16-year-old boy being killed on the A1 near Richmond.

Wintry weather has brought disruption across the county for a seventh day.

A polices spokesman said: "If you do take to the roads drivers should take extra care and be mindful of black ice.

"The road surface can be deceiving, appearing wet, but could be like a skating rink."

Cancelled trains

Around 200 schools were closed on Thursday with many expected to remain shut on Friday.

Northern Rail said some routes were closed, including the York to Sheffield line and the Bridlington and Scarborough route.

Senior York City Council officials were holding a third meeting in 24 hours to review how best to deal with snow and ice on the roads.

A council spokesman said: "Gritters have been out all night and are still out.

"All resources are currently being concentrated on main routes, park and ride entrances and designated footpaths."

The York Winter Wonderland event due to take place in Davygate on Thursday has been rescheduled until next Thursday.
