Part of the Tyne and Wear Metro had to be suspended earlier as a "structural defect" was found on a footbridge.

Trains were unable to run as council engineers found corrosion when they removed cladding overnight. They have since resumed.

Emergency repairs were carried out on the structure in Monkton Terrace, Jarrow, which crosses the Metro line.

Operator Nexus and South Tyneside Council apologised.

Passengers were able to use local buses until a replacement bus was drafted in.

South Tyneside Council said the defect was found .

Teams from the local authority, contractors and engineers from Nexus worked on site working to resolve the issue.
