Sheffield internet cables cut causing £15,000 of damage

Internet cables were cut on Matilda Street in Sheffield city centre

Internet cables have been cut in Sheffield city centre, causing £15,000 of damage, police said.

South Yorkshire Police received reports that a man had opened a cable chamber near the junction of Matilda Street and Sidney Street, and cut wires serving nearby businesses and around 200 homes.

The incident happened at around 20:00 GMT on 13 January.

The man was of medium build, wore dark clothing and used a 3ft (36in) yellow steel bar to open the box, police said.

Anyone with information or who has footage of the incident is urged to contact police.
