The fire service warned people against swimming in the River Mersey

Two people have been rescued from Liverpool's Albert Dock by coastguard, police and fire crews.

The alarm was raised when a woman got into difficulty in the water at about 21:45 BST on Thursday, a Merseyside Police spokesman said.

A 20-year-old man is understood to have dived in to help her and also got into trouble in the water.

The woman was taken to hospital thought to be suffering from hypothermia but is now recovering at home.

Richard Warburton, of the fire service's Marine Rescue Unit, said: "Despite the warm temperatures the River Mersey's waters can still be very cold and can cause people to go into cold water shock and experience hypothermia.

"There are also a lot of underwater hazards in the River Mersey which are not visible from the riverside. The River Mersey has also very strong tidal currents."
