Bury man, 18, charged after counter-terrorism police operation

An 18-year-old man has been charged with several offences as part of an ongoing terrorism probe.

Muhammad Zakir Arif of Bury in Greater Manchester will appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court later.

Mr Arif man was arrested following an operation led by Counter-Terrorism Policing North West.

He is accused of offences including single counts of assault, strangulation or suffocation, and two counts of possessing a bladed article in public.

Mr Arif, of Harrington Close, also faces two counts of breaching a Section 49 Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act (RIPA) order relating to electronic data access.

The order gives police powers to ask suspects to disclose passwords to access electronic devices.

Greater Manchester Police said has been remanded to appear before magistrates on Wednesday.
