Gangs can expect more proactive operations

The Metropolitan Police is creating a new approach to gang-related crime in London.

Senior officers are finalising the fresh tactics, which are intended to crack down on gang culture.

The Trident unit, which investigates gun murders within the black community, is expected be at the forefront of the plans.

A Met spokesman said the intention was to "divert" youngsters away from the gang lifestyle.

He explained: "The Metropolitan Police is developing a new strategy to tackle gang-related crime and serious youth violence in London.

"The new approach will increase proactive operations, while making sure our skills and expertise in this area are used more consistently and effectively.

"The new plan will also look at how we can enhance our work with partners to divert young people away from gangs so they are able to make a more positive contribution to London's communities."

The spokesman said: "Trident is a key part of how we tackle gangs and remains responsible for preventing and investigating shootings in London."
