A cat and kitten are recovering with the RSPCA after being found dumped in a taped cardboard box in Kent.
The cats were found beside a recycling centre in Eynsford Road, Farningham, on Tuesday morning.
The cat was underweight with a hernia, and the kitten had an infected wound, worms and was underweight.
RSPCA inspector Kirsten Ormerod said: "Whoever did this had absolutely no regard for their safety and their actions were incredibly cruel."
The two-year-old cat will need an operation for its hernia and the four-month-old kitten is under veterinary care for its infected wound, the inspector said.
Newly-named Morticia and Wednesday will be available for adoption once they have fully recovered.
