A video campaign featuring a "crying" brain is being used by police in Plymouth to warn young people about drinking too much alcohol.

The video, which has been promoted on social networking sites, depicts the brain of a man arrested after a drunken fight.

Devon and Cornwall Police hope people will find it amusing and informative.

The "Don't leave your brain at home on a night out" campaign was launched to coincide with the new university year.

A police spokesperson said students were not a problem in Plymouth, but the force wanted to make young people coming to the city aware of the dangers of drinking too much alcohol.

Banning order

"We are not telling people not to drink, but to consider the consequences of their actions," Sgt Martin Worthington said.

The owner of the brain portrayed in the video receives a Drink Banning Order, which can be given to anyone convicted of a alcohol-related crime.

The brain is seen "crying" at the end of the video because its owner can no longer join his friends on a night out, police said.

The campaign has been developed by Devon & Cornwall Police and Plymouth City Council.

If successful, the campaign could be expanded across the force area, the police spokesperson added.
