Penrith man dies after being struck by car on A66

A man has died after being struck by a car in Cumbria.

Jack Buckingham was hit at 11:00 BST on Friday after leaving his vehicle after it had broken down on the A66 at Baron's Hill near Stainton, Penrith.

Mr Buckingham, a Penrith resident in his 90s, was taken from the scene by air ambulance to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle where he died.

The driver of the Skoda Fabia car was a man in his 80s from Derbyshire who was uninjured, said police.

Mr Buckingham's family said they would like to "extend their thanks" to all those who "gave their help and support" at the scene.

Cumbria Police said officers wished to speak to any motorists that may have witnessed the crash.
