Strawberry Fair in Cambridge policing 'success'

  • Published

The officer in charge of the policing operation for Strawberry Fair in Cambridge has hailed the event a success.

About 35,000 people attended Saturday's free festival on Midsummer Common.

Ch Insp Dave Sargent of Cambridgeshire Police said the operation had been "incredibly successful" and would set the tone for future fairs.

In total there were 13 arrests at the fair, most of which were drink or drug-related or for public order offences.

When the fair was last held, in 2009, there were 73 arrests.

Ch Insp Sargent said: "This year's fair went extremely well and people had clearly listened to the advice we had given around alcohol and drugs.

"The event had a different feel to previous years and there were a lot of families enjoying the entertainments on offer.

"Any anti-social behaviour was quickly dealt with by security staff, supported by police officers, but in the main it was good natured and the atmosphere was very pleasant."
