Nearly 50 firefighters have tackled a blaze at a scrapyard in Birmingham.

The incident in Nechells on Saturday evening was believed to have involved about 150 tonnes of scrap metal, said West Midlands Fire Service, which was called at around 21:30 GMT.

One crew was expected to be on William Henry Street for some time on Sunday to monitor and damp down any hot spots.

There were not believed to be any casualties and the incident is not being treated as suspicious.

Eight fire engines were at the scene, and on Saturday people living nearby were asked to keep windows and doors closed as a precaution.

The fire service said that during the night on-site staff helped crews with moving scrap metal to gain access "to deep-seated areas of fire".

Several road closures that were in place were lifted on Sunday, the service added.
