Six candidates to bid to be West Midlands metro mayor

Six candidates will bid to become the first West Midlands metro mayor it has been announced.

James Burn will represent the Green Party; Peter Durnell the UK Independence Party (UKIP) and Andy Street the Conservative Party.

Beverley Anne Nielsen is the Liberal Democrats candidate and Sion Llewelyn Simon will stand for the Labour and Co-operative Party for the 4 May election.

Graham John Stevenson, a Communist candidate, is also to stand.

The metro mayor will represent Birmingham, Coventry, Dudley, Sandwell, Solihull, Walsall, and Wolverhampton.

Whoever is elected will chair the West Midlands Combined Authority and have responsibility for a range of issues including housing, transport and boosting the economy.

The nominations for people wishing to stand for the post closed earlier. Those wanting to stand had to pay a 拢5,000 deposit and get at least 100 signatures of support.

Polling stations will be open from 0:7:00 BST to 22:00 BST on the day and the deadline for people to register to vote is 13 April, Birmingham City Council said.
