A woman in the US has given birth in a zoo after she went into early labour while on a family day out.

Kymica Hubbard, 24, was riding on a train attraction when she suddenly went into labour.

Her husband Justin Hubbard, 27, helped her deliver their daughter Drea in front of visitors at Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium in Omaha, Nebraska.

"I knew I was going to have her at the zoo and that I wasn't going to make it to the hospital," Kymica told .

"I just wanted to make sure... that she was healthy."

It's the first time a baby has been born at the Henry Doorly Zoo, managers said in a statement.

"We were happy to be there to provide medical assistance from our first aid nurse and get an ambulance called quickly," said CEO Dennis Pate.

"Our team does practice and prepare for these types of medical emergencies."

Kymica was in the bathroom with her mother when she realised the baby was almost there.

Then while walking towards the exit her water broke, which is when her husband stepped in to help deliver their baby.

"Words can't explain it honestly," Justin said.

"I was more in shock than I was scared. I had to take control of the situation really fast."

An ambulance arrived minutes after the birth.

Kymica's baby hadn't been due for another three weeks when she was born, weighing 5lb 5oz.

The family stayed for a couple of days in following the birth but it's thought they've now returned home.

They say they hope to celebrate Drea's future birthdays at the zoo.

"We hope when she grows up old enough, she can see where she was born," said Justin Hubbard.

"I'll [tell her] 'Hey this is where Dad delivered you' and the beautiful story behind it."
