Chris Brown has been told he must remove the graffiti art along the front wall of his Hollywood home.

His neighbour complained about the artwork describing it as a "sharp-toothed, red-eyed goblin eyesore" that was scaring passing children.

LA city code officials responded to complaints by threatening a $376 (拢250) fine for excess signage.

The R&B star has been given 30 days to remove the art but his lawyer says "he's not backing down".

Mark Geragos claims Chris Brown's neighbours were harassing him and had also called animal control and complained about the star's parking.

"They are trying to suspend the first amendment," he said.

The neighbours say they are happy to have him but hope the fine will make him "tone it down and be a better neighbour".

Patti Negri, president of the Hollywood Dell Civic Association, told the LA Times: "There are lots of babies, lots of children, and they're literally frightened.

"It's like devils on the wall - big scary eyes and big scary teeth, and just the whole vibe is not what we're used to."
