Katy Perry says that her relationship with Russell Brand is a "special thing" that they want to keep away from the media spotlight.
The singer, who's presenting the MTV Europe Music Awards tonight (5 November), said the pair's romance was going well despite the attention.
The celebrity couple have been dating since September and have been regularly pictured together.
"The wonderful thing is we both have our own kind of separate talents, careers and lives and we really respect each other," she said.

"I think that's really important... (But) we like to kind of keep this as our special thing."
'Bit naughty'
However, Katy, said she wasn't sure whether her boyfriend would approve of her cabaret-themed outfit for the Berlin awards.
"Lace and feathers and crystals and corsets... I think it's going to be dark and sexy and romantic," she admitted. "And a little bit naughty here and there.

"I think he'd actually prefer me to be more quirky and covered. I'm sure he'd prefer me in a complete mummy outfit."
Living life in the spotlight is part of being a celebrity, said the 25-year-old, who isn't surprised - or put off - by the amount of attention her new relationship is attracting.
"We both equally get our fair share, so if you put the two of us together then maybe it will multiply," she conceded.
The singer is also excited about releasing her MTV Unplugged album, after the music network officially revived the back to basics acoustic sessions.
"I just did MTV Unplugged and that's really special to me," she said.
"I remember listening to Nirvana and Lauryn Hill and wanting to do that one day."
She said the performance reminded her of small open-mic gigs she used to do and that she thought the session might surprise some people.
She said: "You get to see the real skeleton of the song and see if it's really something worth listening to. I think it's going to be fantastic to show that different dimension."
But the California-born star isn't about to turn her back on the feisty pop hits that made her.
Perry says she's a big fan of Beyonce (who's also due to appear at the EMAs) and that she's about to work with the producers behind her hit song Single Ladies.
"I'm going to be in Las Vegas with them pretty much a week after the EMAs," she said enthusiastically.
"(I'll) be in the studio with them to try to do my own kind of Katy take on that sassy, amazing, high fun, energy girl vibe!"
Katy Perry hosts the 18th MTV Europe Awards on Thursday 5 November at 9pm.
