DSG International, which owns Currys and PC World, has seen sales boosted by demand for TVs and iPads.

DSG, which is soon to change its name to Dixons Retail, said like-for-like sales in the quarter to 24 July were 3% higher than a year ago.

The group said it had gained market share in the UK and its store re-fit programme was on track.

Chief executive John Browett said customers had responded to its strong World Cup promotion.

"This is an encouraging start to the year, especially given the challenging market conditions," he commented.

"We remain cautious about the economic outlook, but we will continue to deliver on our renewal and transformation plan."
