A police officer has been dismissed for gross misconduct after using racist language towards a colleague.

PC Helen Taylor was dismissed from Devon and Cornwall Police following a disciplinary hearing in Exeter in April.

The panel found that PC Taylor had used "racist, offensive and discriminatory language towards an officer of colour" on 4 May 2023.

PC Taylor was dismissed without notice and her details added to the police's barred list, which prevents her from working within policing in the future.

'Highest standards'

Temporary Deputy Chief Constable Dave Thorne said: 鈥淩acist, discriminatory language or behaviour of any kind is unacceptable and goes against our values.

"Devon and Cornwall Police is committed to being an open and inclusive organisation with equality and diversity key to maintaining the confidence of our communities.

鈥淲e expect all our officers and staff to adhere to the highest standards of behaviour, both on and off duty."

The force said: "The panel concluded the decision was reached in large part because of the critical need to uphold public confidence in Devon and Cornwall Police.

"Dismissal was found to be required to underline that such language and behaviour will not be tolerated."
