Police have seized 130 vehicles as part of a national road safety initiative to target uninsured driving in a county.

Essex Police confiscated the vans, cars and motorcycles between 11-17 November, as part of a campaign called Op Drive Insured, which aimed to remove drivers without insurance from the roads.

Patrols were conducted in the west of the county and officers took part in a static guard over two days at a site in Thurrock, Essex.

A spokesperson for Essex Police said a total of 3,089 uninsured vehicles had been seized by the force in the first nine months of this year.

In September the monthly number of seized vehicles peaked at 406 vehicles, which was the highest month on record.

A spokesperson at Essex Police said: "This multi-agency approach to the criminal use of our roads brings together a greater enforcement approach.

"It means that unsafe vehicles - those with no insurance, tax or MOT, and are the most dangerous on our roads - are seized by officers to ensure road safety for all."
