Police have appealed for witnesses after a fisherman was seriously injured in Surrey.

The man in his 50s was assaulted on 26 July in Hurst Park, West Molesey, while fishing beside the River Thames, said officers.

Police were called at around 23:30 BST and the victim was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

鈥淭his was a vicious assault that appears to have been completely unprovoked," said Det Con Claire Catcheside.

鈥淲e believe that there were people on the river nearby who may have witnessed this assault."

The fisherman was later discharged from hospital and is recovering at home, said police.

Surrey Police have asked anyone who was in the area between 22:00 and 23:00 to come forward with information, CCTV, dash cam or helmet cam footage.
