People have been asked to stop putting things in the Jolly Fisherman Fountain in Skegness.

East Lindsey District Council issued the plea after the fountain began foaming with bubbles on Friday 1 March.

鈥淚t costs around 拢250 for the labour and chemicals. We are asking people to stop putting substances in our fountains," a council spokesperson said.

However, some people argued it was "just a bit of fun."

鈥淚t can pose a risk to the fountain machinery and requires time and is an unnecessary use of taxpayers鈥 money," the spokesperson added.

The authority said the area was monitored by CCTV and 鈥減reviously when those responsible have been identified the police have followed this up.鈥

'Not malicious'

Tony Johnson, 56, from Skegness was walking his dog on Friday when he saw the bubbles.

鈥淚t happens regularly and it is not malicious. It is just a bit of fun,鈥 he said.

鈥淚t makes people smile. At the end of the day, it is comical and it should not offend anybody.鈥
