Two new special educational needs units will be created at schools in Burnley and Nelson

Two new special educational needs (SEN) units will be created in East Lancashire after the county council's cabinet approved the plans.

They approved proposals to create the units within Barrowford Primary School, Nelson and Brunshaw Primary School, Burnley.

It follows the results of two formal consultations held earlier this year.

Jacqui Old, Lancashire County Council's executive director of education and children's services, said: "The demand for specialist provision continues to increase and we are working hard to create and enhance existing provision so that we can fulfil our statutory duties."

Concerns raised

In relation to Barrowford Primary School, a formal consultation took place between 24 January and 28 February.

Concerns raised included an increase in traffic and parking in the area.

A formal consultation was carried out between 22 April and 21 May in relation to Brunshaw Primary School, with no responses received.
