Three people have been arrested after a suspicious package was found in a car.

Staffordshire Police made the discovery after pulling over a BMW on the A34 near Stoke-on-Trent, at about 23:15 BST on Sunday.

The vehicle was searched in the Trentham Gardens car park, police said.

A cordon was set up and bomb disposal experts called to assess the item, which has since been taken away.

A 43-year-old man from Newcastle-under-Lyme, a 41-year-old man from Stone and a 37-year-old woman from Abergele have been arrested on suspicion of possessing an explosive instrument.

A police spokesperson said there was no wider threat to the public and the cordon had been stood down.
