An air accident investigation has been launched after two men were seriously hurt in a plane crash near Prestwick Airport.

The men, aged 65 and 75, were airlifted to the Queen Elizabeth University hospital in Glasgow by coastguard crews.

Emergency crews attended the scene at Monkton in Ayrshire after the light aircraft crashed at about 16:10.

The Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB) is examining the incident.

The plane is believed to have come down on private land less than two miles from Prestwick International Airport.

The A719 was closed near the B739 for several hours in the aftermath of the crash. It reopened shortly after 19:30.

An AAIB spokesperson said: 鈥淲e have sent a multi-disciplinary team of AAIB inspectors to Prestwick to begin investigating an accident involving a light aircraft.鈥

The inspectors will visit the crash site and the airport as part of their investigation.

Police Scotland said its inquiries were ongoing.
