A man has been charged with six offences after armed police were called to a Derbyshire street following reports of a man with a weapon.

Officers descended on Chambers Street in Alvaston at about 12:50 BST on Wednesday.

It was later reported that a man had tried to rob a taxi driver and another man outside the nearby Brighton Road Convenience Store.

Firearms officers located a man in the garden of a house in the area and he was arrested on suspicion of possession of an imitation firearm, robbery, and attempted robbery.

An imitation firearm was recovered by officers.

While the public was warned of an increased police presence during the operation, the force later said there was no ongoing risk to the public and no serious physical injuries were reported.

The man, a 32-year-old from Derby, has been charged with possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence, robbery, attempted robbery, possession of cocaine, assaulting an emergency worker, and causing assault/ill treatment/neglect/abandonment of a child or young person to cause unnecessary suffering/injury.

He was remanded in police custody and will appear at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates鈥 Court on Friday.
