Vandals have smashed a number of centuries-old windows at a church in a North Yorkshire town.

North Yorkshire Police said it was investigating the criminal damage at St Mary's Church on Kirkgate, Thirsk.

Windows estimated to be 500 years old were broken between Friday 24 and Sunday 26 May, police said.

The force asked for those with information regarding the vandalism to get in contact.

The Grade I-listed building is where All Creatures Great and Small author James Alfred Wight, better known by his pen name James Herriot, married his wife Joan in 1941.

In 2016, St Mary's was decorated with some of the 40,000 poppies knitted by the Thirsk Yarnbombers to mark Remembrance Day.
