A motorbike rider suffered "very serious injuries" after a crash during a festival performance, his stunt team said.

Jay Bentham's motorcycle collided with a quad bike during a jump at Doncaster Balloon Festival on Saturday, an eyewitness said.

His injuries included broken bones but were not life-threatening, Stunt World International confirmed.

"Unfortunately due to the nature of action sports they all come with a risk and consequences but we always try to ensure that everybody is as safe as they possibly can be," it said.

Mr Bentham was part of a stunt team performing at the inaugural balloon festival on Town Field during an evening show.

"Miraculously" he was expected to make a full recovery, his team confirmed.

An ambulance went to his aid in the arena after the crash, with spectators asked to the leave the area to allow emergency services to work.

In a statement, Stunt World International said it apologised "for any inconveniences and distress that was caused" to spectators and praised the "heroic" people who helped.

"There will be a full investigation into what went wrong and how we can amend it and hopefully prevent this from happening again any time in the future," it added.
