A woman was attacked with a shock absorber in one of the worst instances of domestic violence a police officer had seen.
Javed Qureshi, 30, was arrested after his seriously injured victim approached a member of the public for help in Shrewsbury on 31 October 2023.
He was later found at his Ellesmere Road home where he started a fire that caused extensive damage and endangered the lives of his neighbours, said West Mercia Police.
Quereshi, from Shrewsbury, was found guilty of both attempted murder and arson after a week-long trial and sentenced to 18 years in prison.
His victim suffered a fractured skull, a bleed on the brain and a broken elbow. Police praised her for her bravery in giving evidence.
The sustained attack on the woman, which left her with life-changing injuries, was "one of the most violent examples of domestic violence that I have ever dealt with," said Det Sgt Kapil Pindoria.
"The sentence handed to Qureshi is welcomed by all who were involved in this case."
