Building work on a £4.5m heritage centre and museum in Brora is set to begin in the new year after funding was secured for the project.

The Clyne Heritage Society plans to convert a 19th Century former school at the northern edge of the village.

It has secured the final £1.95m needed for the project from the UK government's Levelling Up fund.

The centre, which is to be open on a year-round basis, will focus on Brora's history, including its industrial heritage of coal and salt production.

The construction work could be completed in time for summer 2025.

Clyne Heritage Society chairman Nick Lindsay described the funding award as "the best possible Christmas present for us - ever".

He said the old school building would be carefully renovated and extended, allowing it to be "re-established as a place of learning".

He added it would improve the northern A9 gateway to Brora.
