Two teenage boys have been charged after a suspected chemical attack at a south-west London railway station which caused two police officers to be taken to hospital.

The boys, aged 14 and 16, were spotted at Surbiton railway station "acting suspiciously" at around 16.20 GMT on Friday.

British Transport Police said when officers approached the pair, they were "exposed to a substance believed to be alkaline".

The teenagers, who were arrested at the scene, have been charged with possession of a corrosive substance in a public place and are due to appear at Wimbledon Magistrates' Court on Monday.

The two boys cannot be named due to their ages.

The force said the two officers taken to hospital have since been discharged.

Seven other police officers were checked at the scene by paramedics.

The incident caused major disruption for passengers travelling through Surbiton station on Friday, with some train services cancelled and others severely delayed.
