Hundreds of people gathered for Armistice Day at a historic cemetery, a scores of ceremonies marked the occasion across north-west England.

Civic dignitories led by the Deputy Lieutenant of Merseyside, Dr Nicholas Jedynakiewicz, laid wreaths at Flaybrick Memorial Gardens in Birkenhead along with members of the public who left their own tributes.

In neighbouring Liverpool, Lord Mayor Richard Kemp led a ceremony - one of the many in which cities, towns and villages fell silent to remember British and Commonwealth service personnel killed in conflicts since 1914.

In Blackburn, people gathered in the Lancashire town's centre while in Manchester the focus was on the war memorial in St Peter's Square.
