A road tunnel in the centre of Leeds has reopened, after maintenance work was completed ahead of schedule.

The New York Road tunnel has been closed since February, to enable engineers to replace bearings.

The tunnel, which allows vehicles to travel under an Inner Ring Road flyover, was expected to be shut until the autumn.

Several other roadwork projects are due to continue over the summer holidays, and Leeds City Council has urged drivers to plan ahead.

Work is expected to take place around the Armley Gyratory (A58), on the Stanningley Bypass (A647) and on the Outer Ring Road (A6120) between Horsforth and Rodley, according to Leeds City Council.

Drivers have been thanked for their "ongoing patience" as the work continues.

Councillor Jonathan Pryor, Leeds City Council鈥檚 deputy leader and executive member for transport said: 鈥淚 am pleased to see that the New York Road flyover bearings works completed ahead of schedule this weekend.

"It enables the opening of Marsh Lane tunnel ahead of the planned Armley Gyratory works and summer holiday period."

Mr Pryor added: 鈥淭he team are working hard to minimise disruption by planning, co-ordinating and sequencing large highways schemes across Leeds."
