A man has been banned from touching unattended vehicles after admitting theft charges.

Ricky Roberts, of Richmond Hall Road in Sheffield, was "caught in the act" trying to break into a Ford Transit van on 24 July, South Yorkshire Police said.

At Sheffield Magistrates' Court on Thursday, the 36-year-old admitted two charges of theft from a motor vehicle and one count of possession of a controlled Class B drug.

Roberts was handed a two-year Criminal Behaviour Order preventing him from touching or entering any unattended motor vehicle, motorcycle or pedal cycle without the permission of the owner.

He will also have to participate in a drug rehabilitation course.

South Yorkshire Police said officers were called to reports of the van break-in in Brompton Road.

When they arrived, he attempted to flee on a pedal bike but was quickly arrested.

A bag dropped by Roberts contained power tools stolen from two vehicles in Sheffield the previous night, police said.

The force said: "After being caught in the act, Roberts had no choice but to admit his crimes."
