A new parking strategy is set to launch in an effort to standardise council car parking in Barnsley.

From 14 October, all car parks run by Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council will be priced at £1 per hour during the week and £5 for a maximum of 24 hours.

Free weekend parking for the first three hours in all off-street car parks, with the exception of the Glass Works and the Alhambra shopping centres, will remain, the local authority said.

The council said it wanted to ensure the town centre remains "an attractive and accessible destination" for all and wished to make parking charges consistent.

Under the scheme, any weekend parking over three hours will cost £1 per hour and £5 for a maximum of 24 hours across all car parks.

On-street parking will be 50p for the first 30 minutes and £1 per 30 minutes thereafter, with free parking on bank holidays.

The Glass Works and Alhambra multi-storey car parks will be priced at £1 for the first three hours.

The council said it hoped the new strategy, which follows a consultation, would allow the town centre to "continue to thrive and provide the best possible experience".
