A crash between a fire engine responding to a 999 call and a van in the Highlands is being investigated by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) and the Fire Brigades Union.

Four firefighters were taken to hospital after the crash on the A890 near Strathcarron, on Sunday night when the crew had been tasked with the rescue of a cow on Skye.

SFRS said one male firefighter remained in a stable condition in hospital, while the other three had been discharged.

Police said the van driver suffered minor injuries.

The road at the crash site was closed for 12 hours for a police investigation.

SFRS said the appliance was responding to a 999-call on Skye under blue light conditions when the collision happened.

The animal rescue at Dunvegan was handled by other firefighters following the crash.

Area Commander Michael Humphreys said: 鈥淥ne male firefighter remains in a stable condition in hospital following a road traffic collision involving a fire appliance on Sunday.

鈥淭hree other firefighters involved have now been discharged from hospital and all staff are being fully supported."

He added: 鈥淎 joint investigation with the Fire Brigades Union into the incident is now under way.鈥
