Man jailed for 10 years for attempted murder

A man who tried to murder his former partner in Moray has been jailed for more than 10 years.
David Cairney, 35, admitted carrying out the attack in Elgin in February 2022.
When police arrived, they saw Cairney sitting on top of the unconscious woman, repeatedly punching her. He was forcibly removed.
At the High Court in Dundee, he was given a 13-and-a-half-year extended sentence, with 10 years and six months to be served in custody before being under supervision.
During the assault, Cairney had also struck his victim with a skateboard.
The woman suffered numerous injuries to her face and neck, and will suffer long-term impairments as a consequence of the attack.
A non-harassment order, banning Cairney from contacting or attempting to contact his victim, was granted for an indefinite period.
Moira Orr, who leads on homicide and major crime for the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service, said: "David Cairney showed a callous disregard for the safety and wellbeing of his then partner."
