A section of a promenade is due to be repaired after it suddenly collapsed.

The path along the seafront at Seaham, County Durham, was damaged overnight on Wednesday.

Durham County Council closed a section of the promenade while investigations were carried out.

The authority said the damage was "very localised" and repairs would start from Monday.

The southern section of the promenade between the steps to North Road and Featherbed rocks will remain closed while the work is carried out.

A council spokesman said: "The rest of the promenade and all pedestrian access points will remain open, however the public should be aware of heavy plant and machinery travelling along the promenade for short periods during the day."
