Jobs are at risk at a Tennent’s facility in Edinburgh after the lager brewer announced plans to move roles to Cambuslang.

The Unite union said 96 people could be made redundant when Tennent's owners, C&C group, closes the distribution depot in Newbridge by the end of June.

The firm said it would transfer 41 jobs to its base in Glasgow, but Unite called the move “premature” and said jobs would only be saved if staff were willing to commute 40 miles.

C&C said the majority of workers were being offered alternative employment.

The Newbridge plant opened in October 2020 in response to growing demand for the brewer’s best-selling lager on Scotland's east coast.

C&C said at the time the move was “only the start” of its expansion.

It now says it is closing the factoryto “better serve the needs of its customers”.

Unite industrial officer, Pat Egan, said it was “devastating” for workers.

He added: “The site has only been operating for a few years and it's a cruel blow that 96 workers are facing redundancy.

"Unite is demanding urgent meetings with Tennent's so that we can develop a strategy to save the plant.”

C&C Group said the firm would provide support to “minimise any job losses”.

A spokesperson said: “The majority of colleagues impacted by this proposal are being offered alternative employment and a consultation process is currently underway.

“This proposal to transfer our distribution operation from Newbridge to Cambuslang is expected to conclude by the end of June, with no anticipated impact on customer service.”
