Landmarks across the south-west of England are set to light up green on Thursday in support of a children's charity.

St Michael’s Mount in Cornwall and Smeaton’s Tower in Plymouth, Devon, are two of the sites set to light up for the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) and its Childline service.

Landmarks in the rest of the UK would also be lit up, organisers said.

Lady Mary St Levan, of St Michael’s Mount, said she hoped it would “shine a light on a cause that is close to all of our hearts”.

The NSPCC said it was also encouraging people to sign up to the Walk for Children event and help raise money for Childline to support children at Christmas.

NSPCC fundraising manager Henry Street said: “For children experiencing abuse every night, they can each seem like the longest night of the year.

"That is why, on the longest night of the year, we want to remind people of the vital help which is provided to children by services like Childline.

“By lighting up landmarks on the longest night of the year, we can help raise awareness of the NSPCC’s services and let children and young people know that we are here for them.

"We are so grateful to the landmarks across the South West which are supporting us this year.”
