A 65-year-old man was attacked in Swaine Street, Stockport at about 21:40 BST on 23 April.
Two 14-year boys who were arrested have since been released under investigation.
Officers said they wanted to speak to a female witness, who is not a suspect, on the 313 bus service from Bus Stand S at the Stockport interchange.
They described her as white, slim and about 17 years old.
She had dark blonde hair, tied up in a long pony tail and was wearing a black North Face coat with a grey polo neck t-shirt, cream pants and black boots.
