Increased stop and search powers have been brought in across parts of Leeds after three men were injured in two separate incidents.

The Section 60 powers came into effect at 17:40 GMT across the north and west of the city, including the areas around Bramley, Armley, Kirkstall and Hyde Park.

West Yorkshire Police took action after a man suffered head injuries and seven men were arrested following reports of a fight in Wortley at about15:00, followed by a second incident at 17:00 in the Kirkstall area when two men received injuries from bladed weapons.

The force said the powers would remain in place for 24 hours, with the possibility of extending them further.

The enhanced powers allow officers to search people or vehicles for offensive weapons or dangerous instruments without them having to have their usual grounds to suspect each person searched.

A force spokesperson said: 鈥淥fficers are increasing their patrols and presence in the area to deter any further incidents and reassure the communities involved.

鈥淢aintaining the trust and confidence of the community is vital and we are continuing to liaise with key community representatives, including the district's Independent Advisory Group, to ensure appropriate scrutiny and accountability around the use of this additional power.鈥
