Two police officers have been injured when their car was rammed by a stolen car outside Newry.

It happened on Monday morning on an on-slip to the A1 dual carriageway.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) officers were attempting to stop a stolen car when it reversed at speed and rammed the police response car.

The driver of the stolen car left on foot.

He is described as being around 25 years old, with blonde/sandy brown hair and wearing grey tracksuit bottoms and a grey top with green shoulders.

Newry, Mourne & Down District Commander, Superintendent Norman Haslett said police received a call at around 09:00 to say a silver Volkswagen Passat had been stolen from outside a home in Irish Street, Armagh.

He said the ramming happened at around 09:25 on the Shepherd's Way on-slip.

鈥淎s a result, two officers were injured and were unable to continue their duties and the patrol vehicle has sustained serious damage which will render it unusable for the foreseeable future," Mr Haslett said.

鈥淎ny attack on our officers, who work tirelessly around the clock, often in challenging circumstances to protect the community, is totally unacceptable and will not be tolerated."

He asked any witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to call police on 101 or report anonymously to Crimestoppers.
